1. This
looks like a Chinese "Pa Kua" cancellation - please see
"Webb" page 212. Amongst its other uses was the cancellation of
incoming ship letters into Chinese ports, so this might account for its being
on a North Borneo stamp. I am not an expert, but I think this may be
222,221 = Canton according to appendix 30 of the above book, ie 5 broken lines
from the top "Yang" = 22222, and one unbroken line at the bottom
"Yin" = 1, so therefore the cancellation reads 222,221.
"Webb"
is "The Philatelic and Postal History of Hong Kong and the Treaty Ports of
China and Japan," by FW Webb, OBE, FRPSL, originally published in 1961 by
RPS London, and reprinted by permission by James Bendon Ltd in Cyprus in 1991.
It is the "Bible" for Hong Kong and Treaty Port collectors.
